One in eight new four-wheelers in Telangana now electric, outpace two-wheeler growth | Hyderabad News
Hyderabad: The growth of electric cars outpaced that of electric two-wheelers in Telangana during 2025-26, with e-cars accounting for more than 10% of new car sales every month and crossing the 15% mark at the peak of adoption, according to a month-wise analysis by the state transport department.Unlike electric two-wheelers, whose market share remained in single digits for much of the first half of the financial year, electric cars maintained a double-digit share every month, signalling growing acceptance of electric vehicles in the passenger car segment.Overall, electric cars accounted for 12.5% of the state’s new car market in FY 2025-26, significantly higher than the 8.9% EV share among two-wheelers and the 8.8% share across all vehicle categories.The data shows that 18,853 electric cars were registered in the state during the financial year, out of about 1.50 lakh new car registrations. In other words, nearly one in every eight new cars sold in Telangana was electric. During the same period, the state recorded 53,354 electric two-wheelers, giving them an average market share of 8.9%.Electric cars stayed ahead of electric two-wheelers in market share throughout the year. The gap was widest in Aug, when EVs accounted for 15.2% of new car registrations, compared with 8.8% of two-wheeler registrations.The transport department’s analysis is based on 10.3 lakh vehicle registration records covering all fuel types and vehicle classes between April 1, 2025, and March 31, 2026.The broader EV market also recorded substantial growth, with more than 91,000 electric vehicles registered in the state and over ₹6,000 crore invested in the sector in a single year. This means roughly one in every 11 vehicles sold in Telangana is now electric.Transport commissioner K Ilambarithi said the trend was encouraging as EV adoption was no longer confined to two-wheelers.“What we find most encouraging is that this isn’t a two-wheeler story alone — electric cars have outpaced two-wheelers on adoption every month this year, and commercial vehicles, which do the most daily kilometres and deliver the most public benefit when electrified, responded fastest of all,” he said.
