Senior JD(U) leader Devesh Chandra Thakur has expressed hope that Bihar health minister Nishant Kumar will follow the political path of his father, Nitish Kumar, and eventually rise to become the state’s chief minister.Thakur made the remarks on Sunday while responding to questions from journalists in Sitamarhi, his Lok Sabha constituency. Nishant was visiting the district at the time and received a warm reception from JD(U) workers.
Thakur backs Nishant’s political future
Praising Nitish Kumar’s record as Bihar chief minister, Thakur said he hoped his son would also make a mark in public life.“Our leader Nitish Kumar has done a lot for Bihar. His two-decade-long tenure as chief minister remains unparalleled. We hope that Nishant would follow in the footsteps of his father and win accolades in public life,” Thakur said.Asked directly whether he considered Nishant a possible future chief minister, Thakur replied, “Why not? Politics is the art of the possible. May he rise to the greatest heights.”The remarks come months after Nishant, 45, entered politics in March this year. His entry came shortly before Nitish decided to contest the Rajya Sabha polls, bringing an end to his roughly two-decade tenure as Bihar chief minister.Nishant, who has generally maintained a low-key public profile, initially declined an offer to become deputy chief minister in the new Bihar government led by BJP’s Samrat Choudhary. He later joined the cabinet as a minister following pressure from JD(U) workers and leaders.

Nishant’s performance as health minister
When Thakur was asked to assess Nishant’s performance as health minister, he said it was too early to judge him.“The young leader has just started off. It is rather childish to ask such a question at this juncture.”During his visit to Sitamarhi, Nishant said he was happy to be in the district and spoke about his desire to serve people across different sections of society.“I am thrilled to visit Sitamarhi, the place where Goddess Sita was believed to have been discovered. I pray to her that I live up to the expectations of the people and work for every section of the society, be it women, OBCs or EBCs, just like my father had done.”JD(U) workers who attended the event said Nishant’s emergence had eased concerns over a possible leadership vacuum following Nitish Kumar’s withdrawal from active politics.They expressed confidence that the party would remain in safe hands under Nishant’s leadership.
