₹550 cr revamp planned for Hyd’s ageing Manjeera water system | Hyderabad News

Hyderabad: In a major infrastructure upgrade aimed at securing Hyderabad’s water supply, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has launched a ₹550 crore overhaul of the ageing Manjeera drinking water system, seeking to eliminate chronic leakages and recurring breakdowns that have disrupted supply across the city’s western corridor.The project targets the nearly five-decade-old Manjeera transmission network, a key source of drinking water for Hyderabad. The system, built in the early 1970s with cement pipelines, has become increasingly vulnerable to failures, resulting in frequent interruptions in supply to thousands of consumers.As part of the revamp, HMWSSB will construct a 232 MLD water treatment plant at Kalabgoor, along with a new intake well, pump house and transmission infrastructure linking the facility to Patancheru and other parts of the city. The project also includes a six million gallon clear water reservoir, a clear water pumping station and an electrical substation.The board has invited bids for the works, which are scheduled to be completed within 24 months, including the monsoon period. The selected contractor will also be responsible for operating and maintaining the system for five years after commissioning.A major component of the project involves laying 24.2 km of 1,700 mm diameter pipeline from the Kalabgoor clear water reservoir to the Outer Ring Road (ORR), followed by another 5.5 km stretch of similar-diameter pipeline connecting the ORR to the Patancheru pump house.The upgrade plan also provides for replacing the existing network with 9.8 km of 1,500 mm diameter pipeline between Patancheru and Hydernagar, besides laying a 900 mm diameter pipeline from Patancheru to Lingampally. Several road crossings along the route will be executed using trenchless technology to minimise disruption.“The project is aimed at arresting leakages and frequent breakdowns and reducing unaccounted for/non-revenue water in the Manjeera system. It will also help in improving treatment capacity and replacing ageing pipelines,” said an official in HMWSSB.
