Indian-origin man, woman arrested in Canada over alleged $6,000 extortion during date

An Indian-origin man and woman have been arrested in Brampton, Canada, after a person was allegedly threatened and forced to transfer $6,000 during a date.According to Peel Regional Police, the victim was contacted in July through an online messaging platform by an individual using the username “Manisha Sharma”, before agreeing to meet at a basement apartment near Torbram Road and Peter Robertson Boulevard.Police allege that a male suspect entered the apartment shortly after the victim arrived and threatened them into transferring $6,000 by e-transfer.Investigators arrested Harwinder Singh, 35, and Riya Riya, 23, both from Brampton, on August 12.The two face two counts each of forcible confinement, extortion and robbery. Singh also faces an additional charge of uttering threats.Both suspects were held in custody pending bail hearings at the Ontario Court of Justice.Police believe there may be additional victims and are urging anyone who experienced a similar incident after arranging a casual date online to contact investigators or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
