Hyderabad: Men and women in khaki in Telangana may soon be barred from dancing in uniform, with director general of police CV Anand set to issue a formal memo prohibiting the practice following a series of viral videos involving police personnel during official and ceremonial events. The move comes after videos of Hyderabad police personnel celebrating the successful conduct of the Ganesh immersion near Hussainsagar went viral on social media. The clips showed senior officers, including Hyderabad police commissioner VC Sajjanar, deputy commissioners and other personnel dancing after the event, drawing widespread public attention.More recently, another video from Balapur police station attracted attention after inspector Rama Krishna, who was transferred around 10 days ago, was given a grand farewell. Women police personnel were seen dancing while the inspector was taken in an open-top jeep amid a shower of flower petals.“Already, instructions were given orally to all the unit heads to stop this practice as it is spreading. This is not acceptable in uniformed service,” sources said.Police sources said the practice of officers and personnel dancing during public events has been noticed increasingly over the past few years. Videos of an assistant commissioner of police and subordinate staff dancing during Ganesh immersion celebrations have surfaced periodically in Hyderabad over the last two to three years, but this year’s celebrations attracted unprecedented attention.Similar scenes were witnessed during the Medaram festival earlier, when several uniformed officers of superintendent rank were seen dancing after the successful completion of the event. Those videos had also become a talking point within police circles and among the public.Against this backdrop, the police top brass is now moving to formally discourage such displays, arguing that they are inconsistent with the discipline expected of a uniformed force.
