‘Haiwaan’ actress Saiyami Kher has spoken out against the online trolling and scrutiny faced by female actors over their appearances, defending Katrina Kaif and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan against unsolicited public commentary. As she completes a decade in the entertainment industry, Saiyami has also opened up about navigating rejection, redefining success and refusing to compromise her individuality to meet Bollywood’s expectations.

Saiyami Kher calls out trolls targeting Katrina Kaif and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

Reflecting on the increasingly intrusive nature of social media, Saiyami Kher said it was unfortunate that female actors continued to face scrutiny over their looks and personal lives. Citing Katrina Kaif and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, the actor emphasised that public figures deserve privacy and should not be subjected to unsolicited judgements about their appearances or personal circumstances.“We have started celebrating being voyeuristic. I don’t know Katrina personally, but she has been fit all her life. I don’t think anybody has the right to comment on someone’s life just because they’re a public figure. She is going through a phase in life where her happiness matters. She is a very secure person and has a lovely husband and family. I recently bumped into Aishwarya at the airport, and she is the most beautiful woman the country has seen, and even she has gone through it,” Saiyami said in a conversation with Mid-Day.The actor further stressed that people should not be judged for how quickly, or whether, they return to a particular appearance or lifestyle. “People need to understand that it can take time for them to come back, and even if they don’t want to and are happy with the life they’re leading, you’re no one to comment,” she asserted.

Saiyami Kher on rejection and redefining success in Bollywood

Having spent 10 years in the film industry, Saiyami believes that learning to handle rejection is an essential part of an actor’s journey. Rather than viewing it as a personal defeat, she sees it as an experience that can offer perspective and growth.“The biggest learning is not facing rejection as defeat, because that is something you face every single day as an actor,” she said. The actor, who made her debut with Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Mirzya, also spoke about the choices she has made throughout her career. While she acknowledges that she has not always had the luxury of choosing from several scripts, she remains unwilling to take on projects that treat women as mere props in a story.“I’ve never had the luxury of having 10 scripts at my dining table, and that could also be because of the choices I’ve made. My debut film didn’t make 100 crores, which is a quintessential measure of success. For me, success is building relationships, gaining knowledge, and learning meaningfully. Of course, the greed and hunger is to do films like Choked and Ghoomer, but these opportunities, unfortunately, for women are still not so frequent,” she added.

Saiyami Kher on staying authentic despite Bollywood’s expectations

Saiyami also spoke about the importance of remaining true to herself, crediting veteran actor Waheeda Rehman for inspiring her through the life she leads beyond cinema. The actor admires Rehman’s varied interests and her willingness to embrace life on her own terms.“She’s 88, goes deep-sea diving, and loves photography and food. She’s very true to herself, and I love her vulnerability on and off screen,” Saiyami said.Sports has also remained an integral part of Saiyami’s life. An accomplished athlete, she has completed the Ironman 70.3 triathlon multiple times and has spoken about how her sporting pursuits have shaped her identity. However, she revealed that people in the industry had advised her to tone down this side of herself because it did not fit conventional expectations of actresses.“I was advised to tone it down by my managers. A lot of people told me it’s not what actresses do. But if I wasn’t being true to myself, I would be unhappy. Maybe it has cost me certain films, but at the cost of my happiness, it’s worth it,” she said.
