Court takes cognisance in coal block case

NEW DELHI: A special court in Delhi took cognisance of CBI charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating and corruption against Green Infrastructure, now Athena Infraprojects, its two directors and two ex-coal ministry officials over alleged illegal 2008 allocation of Fatehpur East coal block in Chhattisgarh. It is the first cognisance of the charges in the matter since two previous judges were transferred in Aug. CBI alleged that Green Infrastructure secured the allocation by inflating its net worth from Rs 2 lakh to Rs 4,758 crore in 2006 by manipulating a loose “expression of interest” from a Malaysian firm as a formal joint venture.Spl Judge Virender Kumar Kharta found the allocation ‘arbitrary and non-transparent’ and flagged undue favour by then coal secretary HC Gupta and joint secretary KS Kropha.
