Kavitha urges Revanth to allocate ₹1,000cr for OU development

Hyderabad: Telangana Rakshana Sena chief Kalvakuntla Kavitha on Sunday apologised for her association with the previous BRS govt, saying it had neglected universities, as she attended Bathukamma festivities at Osmania University Arts College.Addressing students and young people during her first outreach to the university since launching TRS, Kavitha described Osmania University as the heartbeat of the Telangana movement and praised its revolutionary legacy. She criticised the former BRS and current Congress govts over higher education, saying chief minister Revanth Reddy had announced ₹1,000 crore for the university six months ago but no funds had been released. She also said 74% of assistant professor posts in universities were vacant.Kavitha said she had found eight students sharing one room without basic drinking-water facilities during a Ganesh Chaturthi visit to Law College. She urged students to unite and pressure govt to release the promised funds, saying their protests could turn the university into a Telangana-style Jantar Mantar.Calling for systemic electoral reforms, Kavitha opposed demands for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. She said replacing him would achieve nothing as Prime Minister Narendra Modi would appoint another loyalist, and demanded a return to paper ballots instead of electronic voting machines.Kavitha also called for the restoration of student union elections and questioned the status of Rahul Gandhi’s promises for a Rohith Vemula Act and job calendars in Ashok Nagar. She said universities should encourage liberal thought and develop grassroots leadership to prevent political power from remaining confined to the children of established leaders. She urged Osmania University students to use their intellectual strength to reshape Telangana’s political future and help children from poor families exercise genuine political power.
