Telangana’s traffic deaths | Hyderabad News

Four police units in Telangana — Cyberabad, Rachakonda, Sangareddy and Warangal — have figured on the dubious list of 100 police jurisdictions in the country with the highest road-fatality burden, according to data shared by the road transport authority, sourced from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and SaveLIFE Foundation.Together, the four units recorded more than 2,500 deaths in 2025, with Cyberabad accounting for more than 900. Cyberabad ranked 44th nationally, followed by Rachakonda at 46th, Sangareddy at 56th and Warangal at 60th. Delhi Police commissionerate recorded the highest number of road fatalities among metropolitan cities and jurisdictions.Police officials said many fatal crashes occur on highways and city outskirts, with speeding and rash driving contributing. In the Rachakonda and Cyberabad regions, areas such as Ghatkesar, Kompally and Ibrahimpatnam have emerged as accident-prone zones. College students riding without helmets are involved in crashes, while rash driving and self-risk incidents are also being reported frequently.Rachakonda commissionerate recorded 22% of the region’s road fatalities in 2025, as per data released by the Telangana transport department. Rachakonda recorded 1,091 crashes in 2024, resulting in 1,300 deaths, compared with 1,224 crashes, causing 1,345 deaths, in 2023. From 2025, more than 419 to 457, even as grievous-injury crashes fell about 20%. A hotspot under Sangareddy Rural police station recorded 13 deaths, while two NH-65 locations under Kohir and Sadasivpet police stations recorded 10 each. Several other spots, including under Kondapur-Sadasivpet, Patancheru and Sadashivpet, recorded seven deaths each.

Road-safety experts, however, said driver behaviour remained the dominant factor. Citing MoRTH data, they said around 80% of crashes were linked to driver errors. “Road safety goes well beyond helmet and seat-belt use. Unsafe lane changes, negotiating blind curves at speed, improper U-turns and failure to notice oncoming traffic are risks. This points to a lack of driving education that needs to be addressed,” said Naresh Reddy, a road-safety expert and trainer.Fatalities are also concentrated along highways. NH-44, NH-65, NH-163 and NH-161 are among those flagged, covering districts including Sangareddy, Adilabad, Mahabubnagar and Nalgonda.District action plans show fatalities are concentrated on specific corridors. In Malkajgiri, nine critical locations account for 33% of recorded deaths, while Rachakonda’s critical locations account for 22%. Sangareddy recorded 1,091 crashes in 2024, resulting in 1,300 deaths, compared with 1,224 crashes, causing 1,345 deaths, in 2023.
