Hyderabad: A 38-year-old techie from Kukatpally has approached Cyberabad police alleging that he was extorted over ₹22 lakh by loan app agents by sending abusive and obscene messages to family, friends and colleagues about him. The victim had borrowed over ₹1.5 crore from 34 apps in a span of one year and repaid over ₹1.79 crore due to the continuous harassment.The complainant downloaded multiple loan apps from Google Play for personal needs and repaid the amounts he had availed. “Despite the repayment, recovery agents kept demanding excessive payments. They used to call late in the night and early in the morning. They misused my personal data by accessing phone contacts. They have sent objectionable messages to family members, friends, employer, neighbours and threatened to defame me unless I paid more,” the victim told police.Under pressure to clear the excessive interest of almost 1% per day, the victim alleged that he was forced to borrow from multiple loan apps.Between Sept 8, 2025, and Oct 1, 2026, the victim had borrowed over ₹1.56 crore from various apps affiliated to the NBFCs. During the same period, he paid about ₹1.79 crore through payment gateway links sent by the apps. “I have received about ₹1 lakh refund from an app. I paid over ₹22.9 lakh towards illegal interest, processing fees and penalties due to coercion and threats,” the victim alleged.Despite the payments, as the recovery agents continued to demand a further ₹6 lakh payment, the victim approached the police. “Since Sept 25, I have received calls from 63 different mobile numbers. The callers spoke in Hindi and resorted to blackmail and threats,” the victim said.On his complaint, Cyberabad Cyber Crime police registered a case under sections 308(5) (extortion), 351(2) (criminal intimidation), 318(4) (cheating) of the BNS, and sections 66-C, 66-D, 67 of the IT Act on Wednesday.
