'Avatar for our times': World leaders congratulate PM Modi on 25 years of continuous leadership

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday marked 25 years of continuous leadership in government, with leaders from across the world extending congratulations and highlighting bilateral ties with India.

Belgium

Belgian prime minister Bart De Wever congratulated PM Modi on completing 25 years in government, from his tenure as Gujarat chief minister to his leadership in New Delhi.De Wever also recalled his recent visit to India and said he looked forward to further strengthening the partnership between the two countries.

Dominica

Dominican prime minister Roosevelt Skerrit described PM Modi as a “dear friend” and congratulated him on 25 years of continuous service as head of government.Skerrit praised PM Modi’s friendship with Dominica and the support extended to its people, saying he looked forward to further strengthening ties between the two countries.

Nigeria

Nigerian president Bola Ahmed Tinubu congratulated PM Modi on what he called a “truly historic milestone”, noting that October 7 marked 25 years since Modi first assumed office in 2001 as Gujarat chief minister.Tinubu described 25 years of uninterrupted leadership as a rare achievement in a democracy and said it reflected the confidence placed in Modi by the Indian people.He credited PM Modi’s leadership with driving development in areas including infrastructure, digital public goods, financial inclusion and innovation, saying these efforts had lifted millions and inspired countries across the Global South.Tinubu also highlighted the India-Nigeria strategic partnership, recalling PM Modi’s state visit to Abuja in November 2024, when Nigeria conferred on him the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger, one of the country’s highest national honours.Calling India and Nigeria fellow democracies and leading voices of the Global South, Tinubu said both countries shared a commitment to a fairer, more inclusive and representative international order.He wished PM Modi good health, strength and continued success in serving the people of India.

Bhutanese prime minister Tshering Tobgay published a tribute titled “Modi’s leadership reflects wisdom, courage, empathy”, recalling his interactions with Modi and praising his journey from Gujarat to the national stage.Tobgay highlighted Modi’s vision of a developed India by 2047 and India’s assistance to Bhutan, while also pointing to the close bilateral relationship under the “B4B” (Bharat for Bhutan, Bhutan for Bharat) framework. He also recalled PM Modi being conferred Bhutan’s highest honour, the Order of the Druk Gyalpo.
