Hyderabad: The excise department has invited applications for 41 new 2B bar licences across the Core Urban Region (CURE) and municipalities, with around 10 municipalities set to get bars for the first time. The move comes a little over a year after the previous exercise, when applications were invited in June 2025 for new 2B bar licences. Last year, applications were invited for 150 locations, though some licences in Hyderabad were not operationalised. Fourteen of those licences have now been reissued, officials said.The latest exercise is significant as it expands bar licences to locations where bars did not exist earlier. Devarakadra, Ellampalli, Maddur and Gummadidala are among the locations where bars will be introduced for the first time. Other locations included in the notification are Muduchintalapally, Yellampet, Aswaraopeta, Kalluru, Makthal, Gaddapotaram, Kohir, Bodhan, Bichkunda, Chevella, Moinabad, Kodangal, Parigi, Narsampet, Station Ghanpur, Kesamudram and Mulugu.Telangana currently has around 1,185 bars, of which about 657 are in Hyderabad, according to officials. Bar licences are valid for life, subject to the applicable renewal requirements. Of the 41 new bars notified, 14 are in CURE and the remaining 27 are in municipalities and other urban areas across the state.The annual bar excise tax (BET) in CURE will be ₹44 lakh. Three specified locations will attract ₹42 lakh, while the remaining locations will have a BET of ₹30 lakh. Based on these slabs, the 41 new bars could generate about ₹14.62 crore in annual BET. Applications can be submitted till 5 pm on Oct 12. A draw of lots will be held at 11 am on Oct 16. Applicants have to pay a non-refundable application fee of ₹1 lakh. A selected applicant who withdraws, refuses to take the licence or defaults on the prescribed terms and conditions will have to pay ₹5 lakh to the govt.
