‘There is no accountability’: Sonam Wangchuk seeks answers on Leh violence inquiry | India News
NEW DELHI: Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk on Sunday questioned the status of the inquiry into the violence in Leh, saying a year had passed since the incidents and that those responsible were yet to be held accountable. He also raised concerns over the pending legal cases and the compensation for those who were killed.Wangchuk said he had travelled to Delhi to draw attention to the unresolved issues surrounding the violence and his subsequent imprisonment in Jodhpur.“I had to come to Delhi to inform the country that a year has passed since those incidents in Ladakh, incidents that led to my own imprisonment in Jodhpur. I want to ask: what became of the findings of the inquiry commission set up regarding those incidents? When will the officials, the Governor, the Lieutenant Governor, and the Home Minister, who ordered such actions, provide answers? The issue remains unresolved. Those who were martyred have not yet received appropriate and dignified compensation. Legal cases are still pending against people, and many are left in a wretched state. There is no accountability.”Protests demanding statehood for Ladakh and safeguards under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution turned violent on September 24, 2025, leaving four people dead and several others injured. The Union Territory administration subsequently ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident.Wangchuk was detained under the National Security Act (NSA) two days after the violence and was released in March this year.On the Election Commission of India row, Wangchuk said he supported organisations and leaders raising concerns over the electoral process and accountability, while acknowledging that he could not personally participate in every movement.

However, it is not possible for me to personally join every single movement. I hope the entire country will join in demanding this accountability to build a clean, transparent democracy.”The remarks come amid a political row over reported objections by two Election Commissioners to decisions related to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Opposition parties have demanded action against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, a halt to the SIR exercise and fresh elections in states where polls have already been held.The BJP, however, has defended the Election Commission, with party spokesperson Sambit Patra saying that dissent within the poll panel was a sign of a “vibrant democracy”.
