Hyderabad: Former Khairatabad MLA Danam Nagender has approached the Supreme Court challenging the Telangana high court’s order disqualifying him as an MLA, after publicly stating that he would not move the apex court and would instead face the electorate whenever a by-election was held.Sources familiar with the development said the petition has not yet been listed before any Supreme Court bench. However, Nagender’s counsel is expected to mention the matter for urgent hearing, citing the high court’s order that effectively renders the Khairatabad assembly seat vacant.Meanwhile, both the BRS and BJP have filed caveat petitions in the Supreme Court, urging it not to entertain any challenge to the high court’s verdict without hearing them.The Telangana high court on Sept 18 disqualified Nagender after holding that he had contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Secunderabad as a Congress candidate while continuing to be a member of the BRS. The court set aside the assembly speaker’s decision rejecting disqualification petitions filed against him.The high court also declined a request from Nagender’s counsel to keep the disqualification order in abeyance to enable him to pursue an appeal. It directed that copies of the judgement be communicated to the assembly secretary, speaker, and the Election Commission.
