NEW DELHI: The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has warned consumers against using two imported cosmetic creams after testing found them to be unauthorised for sale in India and containing excessive levels of heavy metals that may pose health risks.The cosmetics division of CDSCO has named Goree Beauty Cream and Chandni Whitening Cream, both labelled as “Made in Pakistan”, in a public health alert dated September 8. The regulator said neither product had been issued a registration certificate by the competent authority for import and sale in India.CDSCO said laboratory testing and analysis had verified that the products were unauthorised and contained heavy metals beyond specified limits, which could cause toxic effects.The regulator has advised consumers not to buy or use the two products, or similarly named products if already purchased. It has also asked sellers, distributors and other establishments not to sell, distribute or advertise them. Regulatory enforcement units have been directed to ensure that the products are not sold in their jurisdictions.

CDSCO said consumers should buy only authorised cosmetics carrying details such as the manufacturing licence number, manufacturer’s details, batch number, manufacturing and expiry dates, and, in the case of imported cosmetics, the registration number.The alert comes under the regulatory framework of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 and Cosmetics Rules, 2020. CDSCO said cosmetic manufacturing for sale requires a licence from the State Licensing Authority, while imported cosmetics must be registered with the Central Licensing Authority.
