NEW DELHI: Medical colleges have one month to update the National Medical Register (NMR) or State Medical Register (SMR) numbers of their faculty and specified teaching staff on the Aadhaar Enabled Biometric Attendance System (AEBAS), failing which their daily attendance could be blocked and automatically rejected.The National Medical Commission (NMC) has warned that this may adversely impact the compliance status of the medical college during NMC assessments and inspections.The warning was issued on September 3 after the NMC found that nodal officers at several medical colleges had left the NMR or SMR registration-number field blank while registering faculty on the attendance portal.The commission has directed colleges to review and update the profiles of all medical faculty, Junior Residents, Senior Residents, tutors and demonstrators with correct and valid NMR or SMR numbers.For non-medical faculty and tutors or demonstrators holding Master of Science (MSc) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) qualifications, colleges have been instructed to enter “NA” in the registration-number field.The NMC has made it clear that leaving the registration-number field blank will not be permitted.

The directive effectively makes faculty registration details part of the attendance compliance process, rather than a routine profile correction.The memorandum has been sent to deans, principals and directors of all medical colleges and institutions, besides state and Union Territory medical education departments, directorates of medical education and State Medical Councils.The move is under the provisions of the Undergraduate and Postgraduate Minimum Standard Requirements and Medical Assessment and Rating Board regulations, which provide for periodic, transparent and digitally verified assessment of teaching staff in medical institutions.
