Hyderabad: KPHB police have registered three cases in connection with a clash between student groups at the Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) campus in Kukatpally on Thursday night. One student sustained injuries, while police picked up 16 students allegedly involved in the incident and served them notices.According to police, the trouble began when a third-year BTech student confronted a batchmate over allegedly speaking to a female student offensively. “An argument broke out between the two students, and they assaulted each other at around 9 pm. Subsequently, one student, along with his friends, went to a hostel room where the other student and his friends were sitting and talking. As they tried to kick open the locked hostel room door, another scuffle took place at around 12.30 am on Friday, and we received an alert through the control room,” KPHB SI Sashidhar said.A police team reached the campus and, after speaking to the students, resolved the matter and left. However, tensions flared again at around 2.30 am when an injured student was on his way to a local hospital for medical treatment.“The student was stopped by members of the other group and assaulted with sticks. He suffered minor injuries in the attack. After receiving treatment as an outpatient, he was discharged,” the SI said.Police again visited the campus following the assault. Students briefly staged a protest, demanding action against those responsible for attacking and injuring a fellow student.Based on complaints from members of both groups, police registered two assault cases. “A suo motu third case was booked for obstructing police from discharging their duties. In all three cases, 21 accused students have been identified. We have taken 16 students into custody and let them off after serving notices. Five students are absconding,” the SI said.Kukatpally DCP Ritiraj, who visited the campus on Friday, said she would write to the university administration seeking corrective measures to address several issues observed during the inquiry.“We have observed that the security personnel on the campus are not properly equipped to handle aggressive students. The campus also does not have sufficient CCTV cameras, and some areas are not adequately illuminated. The hostel warden system is inadequate and, in the event of an emergency at night, there is nobody available to respond. I am writing to the university authorities to address these issues,” the DCP said.
