On March 16, 1926, on a snowy farm in Auburn, Massachusetts, physicist Robert H. Goddard set up a slim, 10-foot rocket he had nicknamed Nell on a launch frame in an open field. Fueled by gasoline and liquid oxygen, the rocket climbed just 41 feet into the air, flew for only 2.5 seconds, and crashed back to Earth 184 feet from where it started. The witnesses were Goddard, his wife Esther, crew chief Henry Sachs and Clark University physics professor Percy Roope. The flight attracted little attention at the time, and Goddard kept the achievement largely private for years. Yet that brief flight marked the world’s first successful launch of a liquid-fueled rocket, demonstrating that a rocket could be powered by liquid propellants rather than relying solely on solid fuel. The breakthrough became a foundation for modern rocketry and, decades later, helped earn Goddard a place in the history of human spaceflight. Thirty-five years later, NASA formally honoured him by dedicating its Goddard Space Flight Centre in his name.
Why Robert Goddard’s 1926 rocket mattered more than its brief flight suggested
According to NASA’s history office, Goddard had experimented with solid-fuel rockets years earlier, including work dating to the World War I era. He began experimenting with liquid-fueled rocket engines in September 1921, eventually developing the technology that led to his historic 1926 launch. By December 1925, he had successfully tested a liquid-fueled engine independently of its launch frame, setting the stage for the flight that followed a few months later.What made the 1926 experiment significant was not its altitude but what it demonstrated: liquid propellants could be controlled and burned to produce rocket thrust. Goddard’s work also rested on patents he had secured in 1914, including designs for a rocket combustion chamber and nozzle and a multistage rocket capable of reaching high altitudes. The National Park Service, which oversees the Goddard Rocket Launching Site as a National Historic Landmark, recognises these early developments as important milestones in the history of modern rocketry.
How Goddard’s early work went largely unrecognised during his lifetime
Despite the importance of his experiments, Goddard received little public or scientific support during much of his career, and some of his theories were openly ridiculed. His situation improved after he received financial backing from the Guggenheim Fund for the Promotion of Aeronautics, with support from aviator Charles Lindbergh. That funding allowed him to establish a dedicated testing site in Roswell, New Mexico, where he conducted rocket experiments from 1930 to 1942.Goddard achieved 31 successful rocket flights at the Roswell site, including one that reached an altitude of 1.7 miles in 22.3 seconds. His rockets incorporated increasingly sophisticated technologies, including gyroscopic stabilisation and turbopumps designed to feed propellants into the combustion chamber. Yet much of his work remained relatively obscure in the United States while Germany pursued rocket development on a much larger scale. German engineers eventually developed the V-2, the world’s first long-range guided ballistic missile, which was used against Britain and other European targets during World War II. Goddard died in 1945, before the major advances in rocketry of the 1950s and 1960s. He therefore never saw the emergence of the space programs that would ultimately use many of the principles he had spent decades developing.
Why NASA chose Goddard’s name for its new spaceflight centre
NASA established the Goddard Space Flight Centre in Greenbelt, Maryland, in 1959, naming it after the pioneering rocket scientist whose work had helped establish the foundations of liquid-fueled rocketry. The facility was formally dedicated on March 16, 1961, exactly 35 years after Goddard’s historic first liquid-fueled rocket launch. The original launch site in Auburn, Massachusetts, is now recognised as a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service. A granite marker commemorates the location where Goddard conducted the experiment, which lasted only seconds and produced a flight measured in feet rather than miles.At the time, there was little indication that the small rocket launched from a Massachusetts farm would have such a lasting legacy. But Goddard had demonstrated something fundamental: liquid-fueled rockets could work. Decades later, the same basic principle would underpin the rockets used to launch satellites, send astronauts into orbit and carry humans to the Moon.
